Inaugural Call for Papers
Submission Deadline: July 31, 2026
We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the inaugural issue of Ars Noctuae, a new graduate journal in art history based at Rice University in Houston, TX. The first issue will be published in connection with the Rice University Department of Art History’s graduate conference “Materiality and the Making of Art” and seeks submissions that critically engage questions of materiality, process, labor, and the act of making across visual and material cultures. Both presenters at the conference and all other emerging scholars working on themes of materiality and making are strongly encouraged to submit; participation in the conference is not required. This issue invites contributors to consider how materials shape meaning, how making functions as a site of knowledge production, and how processes of fabrication, transformation, and circulation intersect with social, political, and historical forces. We welcome work that examines material agency, techniques and technologies, craft and labor, reuse and repair, embodiment, extraction, ecology, and the afterlives of objects, as well as projects that reflect on methodological or theoretical approaches grounded in material practice.
Ars Noctuae is dedicated to empowering and uplifting emerging scholars in art history and visual and material cultures by providing opportunities for professionalization through the publication process. Run and administered by graduate students in the Rice University Department of Art History and advised by faculty liaisons, the journal seeks to cultivate a publishing space that is both rigorous and accessible. Accepted submissions will undergo a rigorous review process conducted by the journal’s editorial staff in consultation with participating faculty.

- Scholarly Essays (3,000–10,000 words): Original research articles that engage the theme of materiality and the making of art through historical, theoretical, or methodological inquiry.
- Book Reviews (500–1,000 words): Critical reviews of recent publications relevant to art history and visual and material cultures.
- Exhibition Reviews (500–1,000 words): Analytical reviews of exhibitions, installations, or curatorial projects.
